Cabo Strong Update Aug. 21st Post Hurricane Cleanup

Most predicted a westward turn as is normally the case. As she approached she lost strength and slowed to a crawl as we watched in anticipation the winds were down to 90 mph and a steady rain drenched the southern Baja.

The Pacific side was much more affected as the stalled storm dumped over 10” of needed rain onto our parched desert. The Sierras are made of steep-sided granite mountains and flash flood created arroyos flushing sand, soil, and debris into the ocean and sea. The uphill side of Cabo San Lucas does the same and the streets become concrete rivers flowing into the marina and out into Cabo Bay. As you can see this creates a huge mess on Medano Beach. The locals here are a strong dedicated group who are wasting no time getting our tourist destination back to the clean paradise you know and love. This group effort is a huge job that takes hundreds of hands and an army of assistance. Los Cabos is made up of people from all over Mexico who come for the opportunity to better their family’s lives, as well as people from all over the globe. Once discovered, the Baja and Los Cabos capture your hearts. You will find the Mexicans, Canadians, and Gringos that live here are from all over North America and the world. While we are a diverse group the one thing we all have in common is a strong love for our beautiful Los Cabos and an attitude of gratitude. On your next visit to this beautiful desert on the Sea be sure to thank the people that serve you with a smile and make your Los Cabos vacation so fantastic. Most everyone will ask you where you are from, please be sure to ask them where they are from. We all have a unique story to share and like being appreciated. This simple act of caring goes a long way to better understand and appreciate each other.

Your team at Cabosfinest will continue venturing about and reporting back to you as our desert by the Sea goes from parched dry season to deep green and lush rainy season. On the occasional times, we do get a bit or a lot of rain, we always thank the Gods! It is always a treat. We just love this wonderful Los Cabos and every season finds joy in being part of the community. This is the second half of our Hurricane season so we all stay prepared and optimistic. Los Cabos is fully functioning and ready for your next visit.

Cerritos Surf Town Boutique Beachfront Bungalow Hotel Resort

Cerritos Surf Town Resort Aahhh Cerritos, a beachfront paradise where the nature of Southern Baja mixes with the cool surf culture. The laid back atmosphere is contagious. This is a perfect choice where you can let your guard down and allow your spirit to fly…

This small surfing town is a short and beautiful drive northwest of Cabo San Lucas located on the cooler Pacific side of Los Cabos. It has one of the very best beaches for all sorts of water sports due to the gradual shallow sandy beach. This allows swimming, boogie boarding, skimming and surfing for all skill levels.Cerritos Surf Town has an enviable location right in the middle of the action. Just a few miles down the road from the highway you enter the property thru a palm-lined drive and you can instantly feel your stress melt away. This has been a favorite for not just surfers but for anyone looking for an alternative to the big resorts in Cabo. This is barefoot luxury in the best sense. The staff is attentive and happy. The restaurant is under a palapa perched just above the beach with a great view and a delicious menu serving breakfast, lunch and dinner. The oversized grand pool has a swim-up bar and is one of the best parts of this boutique resort. Surprisingly large for such a small affordable hotel. The large lounging beds are well-spaced giving you plenty of privacy in the back area or move forward to hear the music and watch the surfing. This is a great place for a long weekend, a long stay, or a family reunion, event, or wedding. Book a massage on the beach, take a day trip to Todos Santos or learn to surf, the options are wide and the margaritas are cold.On Sundays, they have live music that draws locals that come spend the day with a day pass. Currently, Daline Jones and Diego Rivera serenade us with their flowing Jazz Duo selections.Day passes are great but there is something special about booking an oceanfront villa bungalow and watching the spectacular sunsets. In the winter whale season, you will be amazed by how close in these gentle giants like to play. This is their breeding grounds so they are usually seen daily. Don’t forget to look behind you to see beautiful Sierra de la Lagunas mountain range where the full moons make their entrance. The lack of city lights makes star gazing another magical evening event. There are 9 different villas to choose from ranging from Roomy studios, one-bedroom, and two-bedroom villas. All have palapa roofs, Half are beachfront the others have garden views just one row back. Some have AC but you may only need that in the middle of summer. The weather is springlike year-round. Each villa has a large shaded deck with sitting areas and a nice hammock for lounging. You can be active and take advantage of all the natural outdoor adventures or sit back and let the laid back Baja lifestyle envelop you.If you are looking for a real beach vacation away from the crowds, where you immediately feel like you belong, give Cerritos Surf Town Resort a try. You will be glad you did and will dream of your return. And if you want to have your own place here, Portus Group is currently constructing its newest Soleado condo project right on the beach next door! Various condos, villas, and lots are for sale in this area. Please inquire about anything you have in mind. We are here to assist you in your Baja Life and investment goals.

Mezcal, the nectar of the Gods.

Mezcal, the nectar of the Gods.
One of the many things that we love about Mexico is the rich culture and history. The story of Mezcal is a fine example. It is legendary that Mezcal was discovered when a lightning bolt struck a mature agave plant splitting it open as it cooked the pulque into a strong Mezcal. This gift from the desert gods is a wildly popular intoxicant. Let’s take a moment to discover more…

..

While tequila has rapidly become one of the most popular and fastest-growing liquors in the world, Mezcal has seen a rapid explosion of its popularity as well. Both are distinctly Mexican in spirit.

Tequila is limited to Jalisco and 4 other surrounding states and must be produced from the Blue Agave, but Mezcal is produced throughout Mexico using over 30 varieties of agave. Many of the producers collect the agave in the wild vs cultivated and farmed making Mezcal is an artisanal profession. The piña is the heart of the plant and takes 7 to 15 years to mature. The magical state of Oaxaca is the most common area where they commonly use the Espadin variety of Agave. 570 of the 625 producers are in Oaxaca. Most villages contain numerous producers, called Fábricas or Palenques, each using methods that have been passed down from generation to generation, some using the same techniques practiced 200 years ago.

Now let us take a quick look at the four varieties of Mezcal. Blanco or Joven is young and clear, Dorado is golden in color but not aged, Reposado is aged with golden hues and the Añejo style is the darker barrel-aged variety. The best añejos are aged for four years.

Enjoying all the subtleties of Mezcal is an acquired taste. Many fans started off with clear tequila in a sweet margarita before venturing into the sipping of a fine aged añejo. We have found the Mezcal to come in a wide variety of flavors and intensity. There are so many to choose from and it will take decades to know them well. The best way is to just start trying them or go to a Mezcal tasting room or visit Oaxaca. A few Mezcals still have the worm from a moth placed inside the bottle for marketing to mainly gringos. The myth that the worm will make you hallucinate has been tried by this author and is sadly not true. Perhaps I was thinking mescaline.

In any event, the traditional way to enjoy Mezcal is straight up with a side of orange slices, or limes sprinkled with a mixture of ground fried larvae, ground chili peppers, and salt called sal de gusano. In many areas, a side of chapulines is to accompany. These are fried grasshoppers and are perfectly paired with the smokey aroma of the Mezcal.

For those of you with a light-hearted approach here is a delicious recipe for a Oaxacan Mezcal Cocktail. Trust me you will absolutely love this great cocktail and win huge points from your drinking buddies.

Step One:
Add fresh basil leaves, orange, and lime wedges to a cocktail shaker. Muddle them well.
Step Two:
Add the ice, reposado Mezcal, freshly squeezed lime juice, and agave then shake it until the ice forms on the shaker, about 30 seconds.
Step Three:
Salt the rim of a cocktail glass with sal de gusano. Fill it with ice and extra basil leaves.
Step Four:
Strain the cocktail over the ice in the glass. ¡Saludos!

Mezcal can be enjoyed with your loved ones, with a friend, in ceremonies or special occasions. You can drink it day or night or even drink it alone. No one will be there to observe your greatly improved attitude and your inclination to hum loudly and dance naked under the full moon. Or was that just the worm?

Blue Lagoon 43′ Catamaran

This is a Private charter catamaran available in the Marina in Cabo San Lucas.

Both of these catamarans can be booked for Snorkel Tours, Sunset Tours, or create your own Tour. Today we are enjoying a 3-hour tour with some swimming and snorkeling at Pelican Rock. The crew is very attentive and starts us off with cold beers and tasty margaritas as we enjoy the slow cruise toward the snorkeling area. The water here is so clear and delightfully refreshing. This is late July 2020 and we have really enjoyed some cooler than normal Summer weather.

We are delighted to see so many amazing colorful fish and corals on the side of Pelican Rock and Sandra even saw a pair of rays. The beaches here are protected and we enjoyed strolling along the deserted sandy coves and delighted in seeing so few people around. Back on the cat, the crew has some tasty chips and fresh Salas and guacamole as well as fresh-caught ceviche. They can accommodate special diets and you can always upgrade the bar to your special requirements. The owners are always very accommodating and look forward to assisting you.

Whether you have a small intimate group or up to 14 persons, the well-shaded aft is spacious and comfortable to enjoy. The bow has an open area with netting and plenty of sunning areas. They play your choice of music and are happy to get the sails hoisted for some sailing.

We enjoyed a meandering cruise along the Pacific hotel row and saw a gorgeous sunset then headed back to the marina for a late summer dinner. The cool thing about Cabo is how close the Arch and Bay are to the marina. They can take you over to Santa Maria or Chileno Bay and even offer overnight accommodations with 4 good sized berths.

One of the many nice things about Los Cabos is our great year-round weather.
In the Fall and Winter season, you see whales putting on a show every day. There are many protected coves and bays for swimming and water sports. This catamaran can be sailed or motored to all the local attractions.

So if you like the stable roomy feel of a medium-sized catamaran give the Blue Lagoon and the Zig Zag a try. You can book your next tour right here at cabosfinest.com.

So whether you are looking for a fishing boat for 2, a snorkeling adventure for a group, a luxury sunset wedding, or a week charter to the islands of the Sea of Cortez, we have you covered.

In Love with Los Cabos

In Love with Los Cabos in Baja California SurLos Cabos has so many wonderful natural qualities. It has attracted people from all over the world to visit and to live in this desert by the Sea. The natural beauty, remoteness, wide-open spaces, and culture of the people in Baja California Sur has been like a magnet drawing the curious and attracting like-minded lovers of nature, solitude, and freedom…

Oh yea, there is also tacos and tequila. From the very first resort to open in the 1950s the southern Baja has been a huge draw for the celebrities and the well-healed crowd longing for a place in this beautiful desert by the Sea. Hotel Rancho Los Cruces was the original luxury fishing resort. It was soon followed by the Palmilla in San Jose, Hotel Cabo San Lucas at Chileno Bay, The Hacienda in Cabo San Lucas, and The Finisterra on the cliffs overlooking the Pacific. Today 12 of the top 20 resorts in Mexico are in Los Cabos. Many of which have been ranked as best in the world. The number of new resorts is equally impressive with recently opened Nobu Los Cabos, The Montage at Santa Maria, The Waldorf Astoria at Pedregal, The Ritz Carlton Reserve Zadun, Solaz a Luxury Collection Resort, The Four Seasons at Costa Palmas, Auberge at Chileno Bay and soon to open Amanvari by Aman, St Regis at Quivira, and the Four Seasons at the Cove Club. Luxury resorts are everywhere.Remember you don’t have to be on millionaires budget to enjoy a great vacation as there are many other worthy choices for far less. There is a wide variety of types and styles with which to choose. Check out the list of boutique hotels at www.cabosfinest.com. Another one of our favorite ways is to drive the whole peninsula with a camper and discover the magic of the Baja.Amazing recreational activities are also in grand supply. Whether you crave an amazing top golf course, a back roads hiking experience, or a local tour of the surrounding towns, you will never be bored. There are many great activity providers that do an excellent job getting you to the action. You will definitely want to go off-road in the desert and the mountains and right on the beaches. Or go to one of the authentic ranches like Carisuva to enjoy the outdoors on horseback. There are hiking adventures to the top of the Sierras as well as massive zip lining parks with lots of adrenaline based activities. When you think Los Cabos you conjure up our gorgeous beaches that are among the nicest and cleanest in the world, you also have the beautiful Sierra de la Laguna mountains complete with their own biosphere and a 3,000-acre Buddhist retreat. Be sure to enjoy our natural waterfalls, hot springs, and caves. There are also amazing birding areas for the fine feathered friends to be found in our estuaries and parks on both the Pacific as well as the Sea of Cortez. Now let us switch from the land to the amazing Ocean and Sea. At Land’s End, you can feel the energy of the mighty Pacific as it mixes with the Sea of Cortez. We experience microclimates due to the varying water temperatures. The Pacific is significantly cooler the Sea and we can see up to 20-degree swings from one side to the other. During winter whale watching season you can see up to 9 different species of migratory whales. The big three are the Humpbacks, California Grey, and the mighty Blue whales. Be sure to come from June to December for the whale sharks, the largest fish in the Sea. Another fun activity for the whole family is baby turtle releases. There are 5 species of sea turtles along the shore from Nov-May.If you like to go below the surface you have great options. Dive sites abound everywhere. There is a marine park at Land’s end, a significant reef, and Chileno Bay boasts one of the largest hard coral reefs in the whole Pacific at the Cabo Pulmo Nacional Marine Park. Snorkeling is another great option if you prefer and the diving is world-class. We draw people here for spearfishing and shark diving. We also have 9 blue beaches that are among the cleanest in the world. There are so many beaches you can live a lifetime here are barely scratch the surface. In fact, our state has more shoreline than Florida and less than 800,000 residents. If wind sports are your passion you have some of the best conditions in the winter over in Los Barilles, Buena Vista, and the up and coming La Ventana. Surfing is also good year-round and especially during the summertime.Fishing is what put Los Cabos on the map. The fishery has continued to produce amazing results. If you come down for the Fall marlin season you can try your hand at any one of the great fishing tournaments. There is a year-round bite as the seasons bring a wide variety of species. We offer a wide variety of fishing boats from affordable open-air pangas to some of the most outrageous luxury fishing boats to be found. If fishing is not your thing you have an equally impressive variety of pleasure boats, jet skis, parasailing, and even jet powered fly boards. We prefer the catamarans and sailboats. After all this activity you are going to need a massage. You can go on the cheap and book an impressive beach massage or check in to any one of the top luxury resorts. These spas rival any on the planet and their treatments are relaxing and therapeutic.Another thing that sets Los Cabos apart is the food. In addition to a wide range of Mexican restaurants coming from all regions of Mexico, there is a wide assortment of international cuisine and the newest trend of farm to table offerings. If you like food you will absolutely love Los Cabos. Now after a great meal it’s time for the nightlife and in Cabo is world-class, just remember what happens in Cabo never happened at all, unless you post it on Instagram. The party starts early on the beach clubs and extends to the wee hours. Good thing there are oxygen bars, chorizo and Ojo Rojos to get your mind clear for another epic day of adventuring. We always recommend taking a full day of doing nothing but lounging by the pool. Here are some amazing pools that are begging you to book that trip today and remember to come for more than a week. You deserve at least a two week, or two-month vacation. Now that you are thinking of it why not make Los Cabos your second home. That is how we started and now have been full-time residents for 15 years. Yes, we can help you find the perfect weekend getaway, the most romantic resort week of your dreams, a huge oceanfront villa for a reunion, or the perfect place to call your very own. Yes, that is exactly what we do.This video is brought to you by CabosFinest your insider’s guide to Los Cabos.

Cabo Update July 2020

Update Los Cabos July 25th, 2020 Here’s what’s going on in Los Cabos. Medano Beach is open and there are lots of people enjoying some sunshine on the Beach…

People are being respectable and practicing social distance, everyone’s having fun. The marina is finally re-opened to all the different boats so the yachts, sailboats, catamarans, glass-bottom boats, and jet skis are all back in business. Let’s go down the marina see what’s going on down there. Well, it’s looking like it’s back to normal and all the boats are coming and going. Drive through downtown Cabo is good not too much traffic and you can see that most everything is back open again. There are a few restaurants and bars that have not re-opened but hopefully, they will.

Coco Bongo is getting opened and there is the Hard Rock and Squid Row and Mandala. But there sure are enough to make it fun for everybody that wants to come down enjoy time in Cabo San Lucas. Good to see the Cabo Wabo is back open and all the normal trinket stands with their colorful gifts are still open. The bicycle Taxis are back looking for riders. Back at the marina, the vendors are selling there jewelry and cigars and activities. We decided to take an acrylic boat ride on a tour of Land’s end. A little surprised to see so much action but I guess everyone was anxious to get back out on the water. Here we are cruising out of the marina, pretty cool clear boats they offer at Enva Tours.

Passing by the Zig Zag catamaran is good to see them preparing for a private charter. Now we are passing one of the superyachts common in Cabo this one is the Azteca 2. Lots of action heading out at the same time. The first stop is pelican rock and wow, so many tropical fish. Sandra decides to try dry snorkeling on the floor of the boat. The water is super clean and clear after so little boats on the bay. There are some diving boats along the way as we head toward lovers beach. Passing by Neptune’s finger as we round the corner to the world-famous arch. There are tons of sand under the arch which only happens every few years.

There is another Enva Tours acrylic boat with only 30% of capacity allowed. Now we head back after a couple of cold beers. You can see Medano beach again with a few people. Here is another one of our favorite private charters, the Contessa a beautiful yacht and great crew. Now we pass Cabo Escapes and the three tall ships of yore. These are getting ready for their reopening sunset dinner cruises. Plenty of variety of fishing charters are available, just go to cabosfinest.com for pricing and options.Well, a great day on the water deserves a night out on the town. We head out to one of our personal favorites Salvatore’s Italian. Nick has taken over the family-run restaurant and makes us feel welcome. This is open-air dining in the courtyard. After ordering a round from the bar we settle down to a seafood stuffed mushroom appetizer and then proceed to over order baked rigatoni, ravioli, and their famous Porketta with linguini.

One more for the road then we head out to some late-night escapades at the Cape. The Rooftop bar has amazing views and tonight they have a live band. It has been a while since we had such a full day like today and tonight.Well, there you have it a full day in Lis Cabos. Brought to you by Cabosfinest your insider’s Guide to Los Cabos.

Alcaravea Gourmet Restaurant, Cabo San Lucas

Alcaravea Gourmet Experience Alcaravea Gourmet and we are going to interview the owner and chef Enrique Diaz. Located just a one minute walk from the marina is Alcaravea Gourmet. This is one of our favorite little restaurants…

This is one of our favorite little restaurants. The owner Enrique Díaz is the head chef and he makes the whole experience so inviting. From the moment you walk in you feel at home.  His Mediterranean Inspired menu is a mix of his experiences while traveling through Europe. What started out as a very small bistro with just a few tables and no liquor license has slowly grown into a beautiful bistro with indoor and outdoor seating. His staff is young and he trains them well so you can expect proper service. They consistently rank as a TripAdvisor Best of the Best. The lunch special is one of the best values in Los Cabos. We come often and just love dining with friends in the back private room. We start off with some drinks after we place our order. The special includes either a freshly made salad or soup. Sandra ordered the catch if the day in a white sauce, Chris has linguine with shrimp, Andrew enjoyed the Cabrillo with grilled veggies and I had the scallops and shrimp. Yes another great lunch at Alcaravea. His dinners are moderately priced and delicious. He has gained a well-deserved reputation based on his consistently high-quality food and impeccable service. Offering a wide variety of seafood and meats and he can accommodate special dietary needs and always hand selects his organic produce. He is always there to greet his loyal following and it is always a treat to go enjoy his casual yet elegant gourmet offering.
