Sierra de la Lagunas Daytrip Guide

We are headed up Calle Naranjos where the Buddhist Retreat Trafalgar West has their beautiful retreat. It is only 17 miles from the San Jose airport and takes about 43 minutes. You take Hwy 1 north and hang a left at K54. The road starts out straight and smooth and then begins its gradual ascent growing more rugged as you go. Stop at any of the water crossings and climb up or down to find your shaded spot. The foliage is especially thick right now and the fig trees are spectacular.

We normally go on a weekday to avoid others but today we are joined by many like-minded locals looking for a cool wet spot to enjoy Sunday or they like to say Dai de Familia and families there are. Frankly have never seen it so busy but found out the other parks at Miraflores and Santiago are temporarily closed. So we head past the Buddhist retreat and head toward the reservoir and find some moving water. As you can see this area is full of giant boulders and families enjoying their day off. You just have to love the Mexican culture, so warm, happy, and inviting.

The Sierra de la Lagunas has hundreds of these types of areas and in September you need only to find a dirt road up an arroyo to see waterfalls and the rare Ranchito. There are so services so bring what you need and be sure to take it out with you. If you are adventurous this road goes all the way to the Pacific side toward Cerritos and Todos Santos. That adventure is about a 4-hour loop and a four-wheel-drive vehicle is in order and a second vehicle is a good precaution.

This list includes only existing clubs and will be updated as there are no less than 6 new private golf course communities currently being planned and built. An indicator to the major expansion of internationally acclaimed master planned communities. Los Cabos is definitely on the short list for those looking for a tropical desert climate on the ocean to call home.

Quivira Los Cabos

This semi-private Jack Nicklaus designed course has been called the Pebble Beach of México. The course measures 7,139 yards and features spectacular vistas, beach front play, breathtaking cliff side holes and meanders thru centuries old Cardon cactus. Quivira Golf Club was recently named one of the top 100 courses in the world by Golf Digest. For good reason, there really isn’t a course quite like this roller coaster golf club. With their all inclusive food and beverages and camera worthy vistas, play can be a bit slow but who cares when you are watching breaching whales as you decide on your club selection.

The real estate options here are the most affordable in Los Cabos private golf course developments with prices starting from $379,000 for a two bedroom ocean view condo to multi million dollar single family homes. The masterplanned community includes hotels, private residence clubs, fractional homes and multiple condo and full ownership communities. A second private course is planned and will also be a Golden Bear design.

Diamante

Another semi private golf community on the Pacific side with a wide range of timeshare, fractional and full ownership offerings. Querencia

If you love a truly private golf club with a limited member base, Querencia may be your top choice. Near San Jose and easily accessed from the international airport, Querencia was the first Tom Fazio designed course in Mexico. Also named one of the top courses in the world by Golf Week, Querencia is a challenge to your handicap and to your senses. Boasting contoured fairways, meticulously maintained green, unique bunkers and subtle transitions, these 18 holes each enjoy spectacular views of the sea of Cortez. The 58,000 sq. ft clubhouse has a hacienda style design and a staff that knows each members name and their drink of choice. A recently added Q Beach Club brings a welcome addition for members, a true private club and a community in and of itself. Future developments include a second course designed by Gil Hanse.

Real estate options include condominiums, homes and home sites for custom residences. Current listings include condos starting at $750,00 to $1.9 million, homes from $1.2 million to $5.2 million. Home sites from $490,000 to $1.5 million for a hilltop site with remarkable views on over an 1/2 acre.

Chileno Bay Club

This is another remarkable master planned community with Golf and Beach Club.

The Tom Fazio designed course has the whitest bunkers with the darkest green contrasting the desert tan against the blue of the sea. This is a wonderfully designed course with each hole having unique features and sea views, challenging fast greens with lots of undulation and many water features. If you lose another ball in the lake don’t despair as there is a comfort station nearby serving amazing food and Casamigos tequila is the house brand.

Chileno Bay club has a wide variety of real estate to offer starting at $2.6 million for a generous 4 bedroom condo at the Auberge run resort called Chileno Bay Resort and Residences. El Dorado

Coming in at our #1 spot as best private golf development in Los Cabos is El Dorado Golf & Beach Club. This course was purchased by Discovery Land Co and re-designed by Jack Nicklaus in 2004. Ocean front holes were replaced by 42 ocean front lots. The prices they commanded were between $5-$12 million and certainly raised the bar on luxury home costs in Los Cabos. The course has a wide variety of terrain with elevation changes, lake side holes, ocean, desert and mountain views. This private club while exclusive is not an old stodgy style private club. From the classic rock playing at the practice facilities to the margarita machines at the comfort stations there is a casual relaxed atmosphere that blends so well with the vibe of the Baja. Phil Michelson is said to have set the course record while playing barefoot. It’s common to see bikinis and bare feet on the course and even a ride along dog.

After a great round you have all the amenities of the beach club or if you are looking for additional fun there is their Outdoor Pursuits for a wide range of water sports, hiking, biking, rowing or yachting on the Discovery.

Cabo Real

Opened in 1993, Robert Trent Jones designed this par 71 course measuring 6,848 total yards from the tips, with complete practice facilities and Bermuda grass. A challenging course for high handicappers, Cabo Real has one of the memorable lay-outs combining ocean, desert and mountain views. It hosted Senior Slam Events in 1996 and 1999 where TV crews captured whales breaching as a back drop to the ocean holes. A recent remodel after Las Ventanas al Paraiso bought the 5th hole to build ocean front hotel villas; Robert switched the 9’s so that the 1st 9 is friendly in comparison to the demanding back 9.

Rates $140. – $240.

Desert Course Cabo del Sol

The often under-rated desert course at Cabo del Sol is an awesome course all to itself, a more playable course compared to the challenging world class ocean course. Designed by Tom Weiskopf who called it some of the best terrain for golf anywhere in the world. Cabo del Sol clubhouse is the largest in Los Cabos with a great Sunday Brunch, outdoor bar, complete pro shop, excellent practice facilities and plush golf carts with GPS computers.

Palmilla Golf Club

One of the first two courses opening in Los Cabos, with 27 holes, the Arroyo and the award winning original championship Mountain Courses opened in 1993.

The front 9 Arroyo Course is a great opener especially holes 6, 7, and 8 that offer some of the best holes in Cabo. Dog legs, long carries and massive views of the Sea with centuries old Cardon Cacti, huge boganvillas and mature landscaping enhance the game.

6,839 yards from the tips, slope 138, rating 73.7

The back 9 Mountain Course is aptly named with flawless greens framed by the Sierra de la Laguna mountains.

The Ocean Course

The third 9 gives players another great option, one of the greatest par 4’s of the world. Managed by Troon Golf with full practice facilities with private lessons available.

Puerto Los Cabos Golf Club

Located within the 2,000 acre community of Puerto Los Cabos is the Nicklaus/Norman golf course. A short 10 minute drive from historic San Jose del Cabo, this composite course offers 2 contrasting styles. Etched amongst rolling hills and desert landscape with distant mountain views and up close Sea of Cortez holes.

The Mission Course is the front 9 by Norman and will become the future private course for homeowners. This 9 has over 400 ft of elevation change, flash faced bunkers and wide landing areas.

The Marina Course is yet another Nicklaus design, one of 6 in Cabo. Featuring rippling fairways, sculpted bunkers, roller coaster greens with sea and marina views. All holes of both 9’s have sweeping views, and with the all-inclusive feature you have 4 comfort stations to keep you well fed and oiled.

Coming in at #1 is the iconic Cabo del Sol Ocean Course.

The #1 public course in Los Cabos, Golf Digest calls the Ocean Course “the best Los Cabos Golf course for experienced players”.

One of the original 2 courses both Nicklaus designed, the ocean course sets the bar for dramatic ocean front golf. Better arrive early and take advantage of the full practice facilities before stepping onto this most vulnerable course. The Bear himself calls these final holes “The best 3 finishing holes in golf”, but let us start at the front 9. From the difficult 1st hole players quickly realize this beauty is a beast. Holes 2-4 are all gorgeous and challenging leading up to the hardest par 4 in the round, the 490 yard hole 5. You then come to the ocean holes 6 and 7, both are par 3’s. After your front 9 grab some fish tacos, you will need the energy as you play the best 9 in Cabo.

Words can’t really describe the back 9 of the ocean course. Why not book and flight down and see for yourself?
