In today’s episode, we bring you ten of the most essential restaurants in San Jose del Cabo. No trip to Los Cabos is complete without visiting the charming colonial town of San Jose. With so many amazing dining options, not to mention the great street food and small taquerías on which to choose, narrowing this list was not easy. We decided to omit any resort restaurants. One of the great things about Los Cabos is how safe and approachable the area is for exploring. So be sure to venture beyond Cabo San Lucas and the gates of your resort to fully get the true feel of this wonderful destination.

First up is Los Tamarindos.
Located in a 19th century farmhouse, Los Tamarindos is the original organic farm-to-table restaurant. The menu is ever changing by the seasonal crops growing in the fields surrounding the restaurant, with head chef Enrique Silva following recipes from a variety of regions and generations. The restaurant’s meat and fish options are seasonal and full of freshness; the fish is hand-selected and the chicken comes from its own farm-reared flock of Cornish hens. The bar is fully equipped so come early and stay late. Also opt for one of Los Tamarindos’s popular cooking classes, held in the restaurant’s adjoining kitchen terrace.

Habañeros Bistro
Long a best-kept secret by locals, Habanero’s Gastro Grill & Tequila Bar offers gourmet Mexican fusion cuisine at affordable prices. For 16 years this restaurant by accclaimed chef owner Tad Chapman has prospered. Chef Tadd is involved in 3 restaurants and spends a great amount of his time at Habaneros where he has been able to express his Mexican Fusion style with a focus on fresh seafood and the grill. A recent move to the courtyard at El Encanto Inn gave them more space and a great location on the heart of Centro Art District. The newest partner Miguel Guerrero was welcomed aboard as they begin this new stage. It is great to see all the original waiters, bartenders and servers who bring knowledge and smiles to your breakfast, lunch and candlelit dinners.

Next is the festive La Lupita Tacos & Mezcal
If there is a local watering hole in downtown San José del Cabo it’s La Lupita, a joyously colorful cantina with a serious mezcal list and the best al pastor tacos in town. Grab a seat on the outdoor patio, and order a flight of mezcal, which comes with three pours served in traditional jicaras, the hollowed out gourds used for sipping mezcal. With a prime location in the historic centro this fun filled spot has a wide variety of delicious tacos. Recently chosen as one of the five best tacos in Los Cabos. Come sit down and order a variety of styles and sample the delicious Mezcal. The waiters are well versed on this desert gift from the Gods. They will gladly explain why Mezcal unlike Tequila should be ordered Joven or young.

Panazia Cocina Mexiatica is a newer option at a great location where La Panga used to be right across from the old Mission Church on the Zocalo. A fresh take on Mexican Asian fusion which presents a nice option for those looking for variety. Start off with oysters on the half shell or a variety dumplings. Second course of salads then wontons with crab, yummy. I often enjoy their spicy Mongolian Beef or fried rice offerings plus chow menu noodles. They feature a nice Peking duck which is hard to find south of the border. Chef Paul and Chef Zamudio bring their creative best at this second location of Panazia Cocina Mexiatica.

Mezcal, the nectar of the Gods.

Mezcal, the nectar of the Gods.
One of the many things that we love about Mexico is the rich culture and history. The story of Mezcal is a fine example. It is legendary that Mezcal was discovered when a lightning bolt struck a mature agave plant splitting it open as it cooked the pulque into a strong Mezcal. This gift from the desert gods is a wildly popular intoxicant. Let’s take a moment to discover more…

..

While tequila has rapidly become one of the most popular and fastest-growing liquors in the world, Mezcal has seen a rapid explosion of its popularity as well. Both are distinctly Mexican in spirit.

Tequila is limited to Jalisco and 4 other surrounding states and must be produced from the Blue Agave, but Mezcal is produced throughout Mexico using over 30 varieties of agave. Many of the producers collect the agave in the wild vs cultivated and farmed making Mezcal is an artisanal profession. The piña is the heart of the plant and takes 7 to 15 years to mature. The magical state of Oaxaca is the most common area where they commonly use the Espadin variety of Agave. 570 of the 625 producers are in Oaxaca. Most villages contain numerous producers, called Fábricas or Palenques, each using methods that have been passed down from generation to generation, some using the same techniques practiced 200 years ago.

Now let us take a quick look at the four varieties of Mezcal. Blanco or Joven is young and clear, Dorado is golden in color but not aged, Reposado is aged with golden hues and the Añejo style is the darker barrel-aged variety. The best añejos are aged for four years.

Enjoying all the subtleties of Mezcal is an acquired taste. Many fans started off with clear tequila in a sweet margarita before venturing into the sipping of a fine aged añejo. We have found the Mezcal to come in a wide variety of flavors and intensity. There are so many to choose from and it will take decades to know them well. The best way is to just start trying them or go to a Mezcal tasting room or visit Oaxaca. A few Mezcals still have the worm from a moth placed inside the bottle for marketing to mainly gringos. The myth that the worm will make you hallucinate has been tried by this author and is sadly not true. Perhaps I was thinking mescaline.

In any event, the traditional way to enjoy Mezcal is straight up with a side of orange slices, or limes sprinkled with a mixture of ground fried larvae, ground chili peppers, and salt called sal de gusano. In many areas, a side of chapulines is to accompany. These are fried grasshoppers and are perfectly paired with the smokey aroma of the Mezcal.

For those of you with a light-hearted approach here is a delicious recipe for a Oaxacan Mezcal Cocktail. Trust me you will absolutely love this great cocktail and win huge points from your drinking buddies.

Step One:
Add fresh basil leaves, orange, and lime wedges to a cocktail shaker. Muddle them well.
Step Two:
Add the ice, reposado Mezcal, freshly squeezed lime juice, and agave then shake it until the ice forms on the shaker, about 30 seconds.
Step Three:
Salt the rim of a cocktail glass with sal de gusano. Fill it with ice and extra basil leaves.
Step Four:
Strain the cocktail over the ice in the glass. ¡Saludos!

Mezcal can be enjoyed with your loved ones, with a friend, in ceremonies or special occasions. You can drink it day or night or even drink it alone. No one will be there to observe your greatly improved attitude and your inclination to hum loudly and dance naked under the full moon. Or was that just the worm?

Alcaravea Gourmet Restaurant, Cabo San Lucas

Alcaravea Gourmet Experience Alcaravea Gourmet and we are going to interview the owner and chef Enrique Diaz. Located just a one minute walk from the marina is Alcaravea Gourmet. This is one of our favorite little restaurants…

This is one of our favorite little restaurants. The owner Enrique Díaz is the head chef and he makes the whole experience so inviting. From the moment you walk in you feel at home.  His Mediterranean Inspired menu is a mix of his experiences while traveling through Europe. What started out as a very small bistro with just a few tables and no liquor license has slowly grown into a beautiful bistro with indoor and outdoor seating. His staff is young and he trains them well so you can expect proper service. They consistently rank as a TripAdvisor Best of the Best. The lunch special is one of the best values in Los Cabos. We come often and just love dining with friends in the back private room. We start off with some drinks after we place our order. The special includes either a freshly made salad or soup. Sandra ordered the catch if the day in a white sauce, Chris has linguine with shrimp, Andrew enjoyed the Cabrillo with grilled veggies and I had the scallops and shrimp. Yes another great lunch at Alcaravea. His dinners are moderately priced and delicious. He has gained a well-deserved reputation based on his consistently high-quality food and impeccable service. Offering a wide variety of seafood and meats and he can accommodate special dietary needs and always hand selects his organic produce. He is always there to greet his loyal following and it is always a treat to go enjoy his casual yet elegant gourmet offering.

The Rise of Celebrity Tequilas

it was originally drunk as a medicine for the common man. Today you may be surprised to find the number of new celebrities popping up as co-owners of tequila, mezcal, and even Mezquita.

You could blame it on the margarita or the “George Clooney Effect.”
Ever since the actor launched Casamigos Tequila with Mike Meldman and Rande Gerber in 2013, more celebs than ever have rolled out their own branded bottles. Let’s take a look at which celebrities are endorsing which labels.

Cabo has been the center of the celebrity tequila bandwagon starting with Sammy Hagar and his Cabo Wabo brand. Sammy is like the unofficial mayor of Cabo spreading his music and goodwill. Cabo Wabo Cantina is an institution in its own right. His tequila remains wildly popular and he has branched out into Santo Mezquila with Adam Levin the world’s first blend of tequila and mezcal and just launched Santo Mezquila.

Not to be outdone Casamigos the wildly successful brand that started this crazed tequila fashion came up with their own Casamigos Mezcal from Oaxaca. While Sammy made a cool $80 mil George and Company sold their tequila for a mind-blowing $1B. Perhaps the love of money is the true driving force behind these newcomers.

Here is a quick rundown of these new celebrity offerings:

The legendary Michael Jordon is a part-time Cabo resident he partnered up with the owners of the Lakers, the Celtics and the Bucks to create the Cincorro Tequila Brand.

Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson is another Cabo lover to get in on the wildfire spread of celebrity-branded tequila with Teremana Tequila from Jalisco.

Sauna 901 has Justin Timberlake’s endorsement. Their angle is to use the Blue Weber agave aged for over 7 years which makes it so smooth and drinkable you won’t need any stinking limes.

Sex and the City star Chris Noth is yet another lover of the tequila spirit with his Ambhar Tequila Brand.

Let’s not leave the girls out, English Singer Rita Ora has her brand. Ora is a shareholder and chief creative partner at Próspero Tequila, which is produced at the Don Roberto distillery in Jalisco, Mexico.

Music and Booze are represented by AC/DC Thunderstruck tequila.

Last summer saw another star jump on the Tequila bandwagon with actor Charlie Sheen. He is also an owner of a bar at El Ganzo Hotel in San Jose del Cabo. His Don Sueños tequila has its first Japanese co-owner, Kumiko Zimmerman.

And finally but certainly not the last celebrity tequila is Villa One Tequila. singer-songwriter Nick Jonas and US designer John Varvatos joined the agave spirits industry with the launch of Villa One Tequila.

Whether you like tequila, mezcal, mezquila or any other agave-based spirit, be sure to enjoy it with a friend, a lover, or drink it alone. You will quickly see a marked improvement in your attitude and the world around you. We at Cabos Finest have found drinking tequila to be one of many things we love about Los Cabos. While we prefer a fine noncelebrity reposado on the rocks, there is no such thing as a wrong tequila well except for Cuervo Gold. On your next visit to the fuzzy land of blue agave bliss, be sure to give thanks to the purveyors of this elixir, to the sun-beaten Jimadores sweating to harvest in the harsh Jalisco sun. And give thanks to the desert gods that bring to you this miracle in a bottle. Tequila is México.

Flora Farm San Jose del Cabo

What started off as a 25 acre organic farm has turned into one of the most sought after experiences in Mexico. Flora’s Field Kitchen is the nucleus of this vision. Serving breakfast, lunch and dinner in the middle of the garden makes the farm to table concept extra fast and fresh. The day begins hours before dawn as the staff begin baking the breads, harvesting the crops and preparing the menu for the days guests, the owners and all the private events and high society weddings that may occur on any given day.

The experience gives you the feeling of wellness and balance that is incorporated into their menu and way of life. It is actually a simple formula, combine hand made food using farm fresh ingredients.

What they have accomplished on this 25 acres is amazing, every corner has been utilized yet feels open and not cramped. There are the little things like their own home made ice cream and there is the mind blowing hay-bail cottages that encircle the edges of the property. These owners have access to the fields, private pools and privileges to the grounds and spa.

Our private tour of the grounds was inspirational. The vibe of the place is tangible. You are at once transported and relaxed growing thirsty for their signature juices. So we headed back to the Bar to order a round and start thinking about our lunch. But first how about two of the best cocktails? I ordered the smoky Mezcal Margarita and Sandra tried the Cilantro Gin and Tonic.

Soon after we were greeted by the chef who prepared an amazing colorful first course of raw, pickled and braised vegetable platter. Even the flowers that lend vivid contrast to the dish are edible. The sauces and flavors were intense and the portion generous. The chef brought us another signature vegetarian plate this round being a couscous hummus platter with the freshest greens. We loved the lunch and plan another return for dinner when they feature local singer and songwriters.

They have recently added several high quality retail shops, gifts, colorful bags, resort fashion, beautiful jewelry store, body shop and coffee cafe.
