Pueblo Bonito Rose

Grand Fiesta Americana

This upscale family resort is quiet large and sprawling which gives you great views and plenty of pools and dining options. The Fiesta Resorts are known for their service levels and the Grand is their top level, prepared to be impressed. Located within the Cabo del Sol community with two great golf courses, walking trails and a long strand of sandy beach.

This appropriately named surf hotel has a privileged location on the Playa Acapulquito surf break called “Old Man’s”. Here at Cabo Azul there are three legendary breaks for various skill levels. The beginner break out front can get dicey with bigger swells but has been a favorite for all levels, especially with Mike Doyle Surf School on site. The California style hotel has been recently expanded and can accommodate large groups. A great pool and restaurant as well as an easy to explore from location make this one hard to beat if you are needing a great surf vacation.

Villa Santa Cruz

If smaller and more intimate is on your short list for surf vacations, this one adds luxury and comfort to the mix. With only 4 amazing suites it is recommended to take the whole place but still nice for just the two of you. A perfect couples retreat, the romance factor will win you points whether you are the surfer and your husband is the lounger by the pool or visa versa. Future expansion plans and new restaurant won’t diminish the privacy factor as they have a huge 20 acre lot and nearly no neighbors. While “Monuments” surf break is a gnarled, rocky, urchin infested left break it is a favorite for it’s power and amazing view of Land’s End and Cabo Bay. Located on the Pacific side 40 miles north of Cabo San Lucas lies the micro beach town, Los Cerritos. This fast growing area is popular since the beach is wide and gradual so the shallow water gives all levels of surfing, boogie boarders and body surfers something to enjoy. The One and Only Palmilla-

Listed previously as one of the top Ultra Luxury Resorts for good reason. The One and Only Palmilla makes the grade also as a top golf resort. The Palmilla course was the first course and the first Jack Nicklaus course in Los Cabos. With 3 separate 9 hole courses, the Mountain Course, the Desert Course and the Ocean Course there is nice variety and mature landscaping that deeply contrasts the desert colors with the greenest of grass. Most of the holes are across the highway side of the corridor but have spectacular views of the coastline and the Sierra de la Laguna Mountains. Enjoy a nice practice facility to work out your swing prior to tee time.

Quivira Los Cabos

This mega-project has been 16 years in the making. The golf course debuted in 2015, oh boy was it worth the wait. Jack Nicklaus certainly designed a jaw dropper of a course. It has been dubbed “The Pebble Beach of Mexico” for its dramatic location along the cliffs of Cabo Falso and the old lighthouse. The resort options are numerous with Pueblo Bonito Sunset as its flagship, Pacifica and the Towers of Pacifica as its adults only all inclusive option and the Montecristo Estates and Novaspania for large villa rentals. Full ownership options are offered as well for those fortunate investors ready to go full or part time. Play the course first and you will be open to the idea of moving here permanently. 

Hacienda del Mar at Cabo del Sol

The Ocean course is yet another great Nicklaus course, the second one he built that helped cement Los Cabos as a world class golfing destination. The three finishing holes in particular leave you awestruck and wanting more. A newer Desert course added by the masterful Tom Weiskopf is equally impressive. Hacienda del Mar, a Sheraton hotel and timeshare sits seaside just as you finish the ocean course. With its gorgeous beach, multiple pools, nice restaurant options and full spa, your family will have plenty of non-golfing activities to make everyone content. 

The Hilton Beach & Golf Resort

The Hilton, located on the Cabo Real golf course is part of the larger Grupo Questro Golf program. Take advantage of the Questro Golf Pass which gives you access to Nicklaus designed Club Campestre and the Puerto Los Cabos Norman/Nicklaus course. Currently they are expanding Puerto Los Cabos to two separate 18 hole courses in addition to expanding the massive marina project. Robert Trent Jones III designed Cabo Real, a challenging resort course with two distinctly different nines. The front is by far the easier one so better work out your game before attempting the back nine. This resort is in and of itself an exceptional seaside attraction with a swimmable cove and huge pool. 

JW Marriott Puerto Los Cabos

This newer addition to the expanding Puerto Los Cabos marina project is designed in a modern style along the dunes of the Sea of Cortez. Soon to be a shared project with the Ritz Carlton Reserve opening early in 2018. In addition the second full golf course is well under way which will total 18 Nicklaus and 18 Norman holes. Until then the two courses are striking in the style differences but both impressive. Offering an all inclusive food and beverage package which includes “comfort stations” with high quality tequila. Beware, the last three holes may get a bit sloppy but enjoyable. Start at the full practice facility to stretch out your back and begin a good round.

These are the amazing resorts in the luxury category. It was hard to stop at five as Cabo has a wide variety of great modern hotels and resorts. This list comprises of those that have consistently led by providing exceptional service, best locations and amenities aplenty.

The Cape a Thompson Hotel

Opened last year to critical acclaim, the Cape is on the far eastern side of Cabo Bay and adjacent to the Sunset Di Mona Lisa restaurant. The views through The Arch at Land’s End is amazing especially from their Rooftop Bar and Nightclub. There are rooms and stunning suites and huge villas with their own rooftop lounges. The Cape has two pools and outdoor spa cabanas along with casual dining and open air lounges. This is the most modern of Cabo designs and attracts the younger, fitter crowd that enjoy live music and DJ’s on the weekends. They draw the local crowd as well as tourists with their amazing rooftop terrace, lounge and bar. The advanced surf break Monuments is directly in front but beware swimming here. Well known interior architect Marisabel Gomez has his signature on this modern yet casual, comfortable styled hotel. Rack rates range from $465 to $2275 plus tax peak season.

Grand Solmar at Land’s End

Opened in 2010 and finished in 2016 the Grand Solmar at Land’s End replaced the original boutique Solmar, one of the original hotels in Cabo built before statehood and just prior to the highway 1 completion. The location is the ‘last resort’ as it is the most southern of all hotels. The Bulnes family really outdid themselves with this ocean’s edge property. There is no resort closer to the ocean and their 6 pools all have dramatic views. Many of their suites are practically right over the water and range from a spacious 700 sq ft suite to the 6200 sq ft 4 bedroom Penthouses. Plenty of swim up pool bars, a sports bar and 5 restaurants make up this award winning resort at the end of the road. Throw in the Sea Spa, a huge fitness center and whale watching from every suite and you have a winning formula. Rates starting at $475 plus tax. 

The Hacienda Beach Club and Residences

Formerly the Hotel Camino Real built in 1964. This condo hotel and villa resort has an enviable location originally next to the private air strip that was later turned into the Cabo Marina. Surprisingly quiet on the busiest of all beaches, Playa Medano. It has a relaxed atmosphere and a short walk to world class nightlife and restaurants. Even on Holiday weeks the resort is never full as these are second and third homes to the residents some of which rent them out through their management company. So if you are looking for exclusive, well-appointed, center of it all location with wonderful beach club, bars and Oceanside Restaurant give this a try for a stay or purchase one for yourself.  From two bedroom ocean view condos starting at $1400 plus tax to four bedroom ocean front villas starting at $4450 plus tax.

Villa La Estancia Resort and Spa

Located on the eastern side of Medano Beach lies the Villas Group of resorts. The three resorts share what feels like a world unto themselves with spas, restaurants, grocery store, shopping and a great beach front location. In the middle lies their top private residence club, Villa la Estancia. This Spanish Colonial inspired architecture has 156 units in a mix of two, three and huge four bedroom penthouses that are full ownership, quarter share and 4 week ownerships with titles. They have their condo hotel rental program for those owners wishing to rent out unused time. Built in 2004 for the higher end client that wanted larger residence style resort vacations. This has been a trend in the industry as families like to have the comforts of a second home and the 5 star amenities of a high end hotel. Each villa has large living rooms, dining and full kitchens and well appointed balconies with views of Cabo Bay and Land’s End in the distance. 

Pueblo Bonito Sunset Beach at Quivira

If you like expansive mega resorts with tons of amenities, pools and restaurants with stunning views you will love Sunset Beach. This has been a work in progress for the past 16 years and you always have something new to experience as they keep adding amenities, beach clubs, golf, and new restaurants. They are also well on their way with full ownership home options in a wide range of prices. Their Quivira golf course is a Jack Nicklaus stunner with cliff side holes wrapping around the southern most tip of the Baja peninsula. The course has been called ‘The Pebble Beach of Mexico’ and is a joy to play. Being semi-private you have to stay on property to play the course. Plans for a private 2nd course and expanding the resort are underway. They have optional all inclusive plans and kitchens in all units. The sky pool is the highest pool and an excellent place to sip a cold beverage, catch some sun and relax while whale watching. The classic Mexican design even has a beautiful chapel designed in typical Hacienda tradition. They have three, four and five bedroom residences with private pools high up on the cliffs and close to the beach. When you pull into the gate the road to the resort is still another mile as this 1800 acre property is immense. The views on the ride in is simply magical and distracting so keep your eyes on the road or your rental insurance policy may need to be used. All in all this mega project has matured well and will delight even the most well traveled guests. 

When only the best will suffice. Any one of these will overwhelm the senses and leave nothing to chance. 

1. The Resort at Pedregal – formerly Capella Cabo

On quiet Solmar Beach but close to downtown Cabo this 24 acres of pure bliss has been on most lists as one of top in the world. For good reason as this product is for those who require the best of all things a resort can possibly offer. Residential style casitas sit so close to the pounding surf that you may have to close the doors the first night until you get used to the rumble. All the requisite offerings are waiting once you pass through the chandelier lit tunnel. 

2. The One and Only Palmilla – formerly the Palmilla

While this standard bearer is the grand dame of top shelf and one of the first built in Los Cabos, the service levels have never wavered.  

A modest 15 rooms when she opened in 1956, a major $90 million renovation just in time for John Travolta’s 50th birthday celebration in 2004 and rebirths as The One and Only Palmilla with 115 residences. Celebrities have always flocked here since the earliest opening. The first golf course in Los Cabos opened in 1991, a 27 hole masterpiece by Jack Nicklaus rounds out the impeccable offerings of this best in class resort at the point of Palmilla. Casitas and villas up to 10,000 sq ft are offered and the restaurants, bars, spa and overall amenities make this an exceptional experience.

3. Las Ventanas al Paraiso – A Rosewood Resort

The margin of awesome is too close to call with these top 5 but if you are looking to spend the most per night then you can do it in billionaire style in the Ty Warner Villa at a mere $35,000 a night (plus tax but who’s counting). You don’t have to have that level of disposable to get a good nights rest here as many of the residences are condo hotels that you can purchase outright. A recent expansion after the last expansion in 2010 goes to show that they are attracting plenty of guests and returning lucky travelers that are hooked on the Windows of Paradise.

4. Esperanza – An Auberge Resort

Named one of the top Resort brands in the world in 2017 Conde Nast Traveler, this is Auberge’s proud Mexican offering. Three projects in one with top spa make this colorful cliff side retreat another memorable offering. What makes their original Napa Resort Calistoga Ranch special has been transported to this unique retreat at Punta Ballena. An aptly named Whales Point due to the daily sightings during the winter season. Well appointed suites, two and three bedroom villas and large oceanfront homes gives the traveler plenty of grand options. Esperanza translates to Hope but rest assured you will not have to hope, you are guaranteed an amazing stay.

5. Chileno Bay Resort and Residences – An Auberge Resort
