Los Cabos Loop Road

Join us on the famous and beautiful 4-hour road-trip. If you love a great adventurous time and are savvy enough to know how easy it is to drive here then be sure to jump in a vehicle and head out on the open road starting and finishing in Cabo San Lucas.

Oakley and I made it an early start from our corporate headquarters in Cabo. We decided to go counterclockwise to maximize the sunrise views and to have the sun at our backs through the mountains. The first half-hour we drove what is arguably the most scenic section in the Baja the Golden Corridor between Cabo and San Jose. In this section, we pass by gorgeous beaches and multi-million dollar homes, and brand-new mega-resorts. This area has become the playground of some of the richest homes and 5-star resorts in all of Mexico. As we arrive at the crossroad circle we elect to take the toll road toward the SJD international airport. This is another beautiful stretch and we can speed up on this excellent two lane highway with little morning traffic. The sun is up as we pass by the impressive Sierra de la Laguna mountains. These peaks are over 6,800 feet from Sea level and are great to explore. We pass by the airport and notice the wide range of commercial and private jets of all sizes. Once you exit the toll road and pass the airport you simply hang a left onto the Federal highway 1. This 1,063-mile wonder of desert engineering runs from Cabo north to Tijuana. It was completed in 1974 and certainly fast-tracked the development of the Baja. We start heading north of San Jose and the road narrows and what little traffic there is disappears. The next hour is an amazing winding experience through the quaint little villages of Caduaño, Miraflores, and Santiago, each having an abundance of friendly faces and outdoor adventures. This is the area most famous for waterfalls and mountain hiking. See our website www.cabosfinest.com for specifics. From here we cross over another major bridge at the intersection of La Ribera where the new Four Seasons recently opened. Heading north toward Buena Vista we get another glimpse of the Sea of Cortez. It is a short ride along the Sea to Los Barriles and the quaint town famous for great fishing and has seen a rebirth with wind sport enthusiasts flocking here for the consistent winter winds. We continue north and for the next hour we enjoy the winding road through Las Palmas with their tall trees and mango groves. This is another great stretch of driving past centuries-old cacti and ancient granite outcroppings.

We take it nice and slow winding through this ever-winding section of road. Up and down, through and over and over this is a road worth tripping and Oakley is the perfect companion.

We take a puppy stop at the little mountain village, San Antonio, where they have seen a recent uptick from the migration of kiteboarders and outdoor adventurers that pass through on the way to the growing area of La Ventana and El Sargento. Just a few miles further is the historically significant El Triunfo.

This was the first mine in southern Baja established in the late 1700´s and was the largest town in all the B.C.S. Silver and gold were later discovered in 1862 and a boom time was established. Many of the 49ers from the California gold rush that were late for the party came here and at the peak were over 10,000 inhabitants. Many riches were made and pianos from around the world were hauled down.

The original smoke stack ´La Ramona´ is over 150 feet tall and rumored to have been designed by Gustave Eiffel. This a cool stopping point for touring and stopping for a late breakfast or early lunch. We grabbed some pastries at the El Triunfo Cafe and hit the road toward La Paz. We are roughly halfway on our loop and ready to continue this most excellent road trip.

We enjoy the last section of the two-lane road for the next 20 minutes and make the next turn unto Highway 19 and head south toward Todos Santos. This is a brisk 32-mile cruise on a wide well kept highway. It is a joy to sit back head along this straight section of highway. Oakley can relax and decides to chill on the passenger floor as I hit the accelerator. It is a short direct route into Todos Santos for our next break for lunch. There are many great choices for food and sightseeing in Todos Santos. This Pueblo Magica is indeed magical with just over 7,000 full-time residents. A pretty small town with a surprising amount of rich culture, art, and a cool surf vibe. There is a bypass around Todos Santos if you are in a hurry but we are not. After a quick bite it is time to continue our loop south onto the surf towns of Pescadero and Cerritos. The mountain range is still within view as we circle the whole range. The highway was vastly improved in 2008 to help move commerce from La Paz and the USA as Los Cabos continues to prosper. As any old-timers can tell you this used to be a rather sketchy road with few passing areas and many trucks. It is now a pleasant one-hour trip from Todos Santos to Cabo San Lucas.We wind down the final section and go from deserted desert to seeing the first traffic lights, supermarkets, and strip malls on the outskirts of Cabo San Lucas. You literally go from mountains, bays, and endless open spaces to the wildly successful resort town in a blink of the eye. If you miss the good old days of the sleepy fishing village of old Cabo all you have to do is jump in a car and head out either direction of the incredible Cabo Loop road.

Flora Farms Hillside Hay Lofts and Culinary Cottages

Flora Farms is a world unto itself.. What started off as a 25-acre organic farm has turned into one of the most sought after experiences in Mexico. Flora’s Field Kitchen is the nucleus of this vision. 

Serving breakfast, lunch, and dinner in the middle of the garden makes the farm to table concept extra fast and fresh. The day begins hours before dawn as the staff begins baking the bread, harvesting the crops, and preparing the menu for the days’ guests, the owners, and all the private events and high society weddings that may occur on any given day.The harvesting of the greens continues throughout the day. All meats served at Flora’s Field Kitchen come from their nearby 150-acre ranch where animals are humanely raised on diets that do not include hormones or antibiotics. The experience gives you the feeling of wellness and balance that is incorporated into their menu and way of life. It is actually a simple formula, combine handmade food using farm-fresh ingredients.What they have accomplished on these 25 acres is amazing, every corner has been utilized yet feels open and not cramped. There are the little things like their own home made ice cream and there is the mind blowing Hillside hayloft and Culinary Cottages that encircle the edges of the property. These owners have access to the fields, private pools and privileges to the grounds and spa. We spent a joyous week in a two bedroom Hillside Hayloft. Being seasoned travelers did not diminish the awe we experienced upon walking into the villa. The attention to detail is apparent around every corner and every nook and cranny. The main kitchen is a chefs delight with all the accoutrements you would expect from this world reknowned culinary resort. The open and light living room is perfect and the second family room can be used as a third bedroom. The salt water plunge pool is heated and we delighted in the cedar soaking tub each day and night. The bedrooms are spacious and separated making this a place for privacy while attaining the mountain views beyond San Jose.

Our private tour of the grounds was inspirational. The vibe of the place is tangible. You are at once transported and relaxed growing thirsty for their signature juices. So we headed back to the Bar to order a round and start thinking about our lunch. But first how about two of the best cocktails? I ordered the smoky Mezcal Margarita and Sandra tried the Cilantro Gin and Tonic. After a wonderful lunch prepared by Chef Guillermo we decided to get some sun at the Flora Spa and pool. This is for owners and guests staying at their signature cottages and villas.  There are also many private gathering areas for members as well as activities each day. We also took advantage of their recently opened beach club at nearby La Laguna. They are offering new beachfront flats for sale fractionally as well.We took great joy in harvesting our own veggies each day and felt inspired to cook our daily pickings. We met many of the owners who came from all over North America. Everyone staying there seems genuinely happy to be part of this farming community.

We ended the week as we began it by preparing a healthy fresh picked organic meal. This one is 109 meters making her a whopping 357ft in length. Her beam is 53.5 feet and besides looking like a modern sculpture in style, this yacht has many first in class innovations.

This sleek vessel was commissioned by Cowboys owner Jerry Jones and family by Oceano. They partnered with Nuvolari & Lenard for the exterior and Reymond Langston’s design for the interior. She has an aluminum superstructure with a steel hull. The results are stunning and eye-catching. The Jones family caught the superyachting bug a few years back by chartering some impressive yachts in the Mediterranean. These life-changing family vacations allowed them to hone the details they would require in their first privately built Gigayacht.There is the beach club complete with a heated pool, lounging areas, and bar, a large dining area for the whole family, the gym, spa, and Helipad. There is a home office where Jerry spent time during the NFL draft that he calls the war room.The engine room is on one level which is unusual for this size vessel. This allowed much more room for the preferred lower deck where you will find 6 spacious guest suites and the beach club. There are also 30 crew members in the 15 additional cabins.The new innovative propulsion system is efficient but also has an impressive 18 knot two speed. The anchor stabilizing system ensures a restful stay in the lap of luxury.Mr. Jones says his experience of owning and managing a professional football team helped him assemble the team behind her design. There are always contrasting motivations and issues when you are doing groundbreaking design in any field. The Oceano Bravo Eugenia has succeeded in combining efficiently with beautiful lines. She looks perfectly at home in Los Cabos where we are blessed to watch many of the world’s finest yachts come to play. Solaz Los Cabos Resort and Residences Los Cabos

The front desk was very accommodating to our early check-in and we headed down to the pools and bars. This ultra-modern design is a striking contrast to other resorts in Los Cabos. The roadside view gives you the impression of a giant industrial design meets children’s play blocks.

The lobby is open-air and inviting where you get your first glimpse of the natural landscaping and magnificent views. I am impressed with the use of local desert landscaping with a wide variety of desert cacti, aloes, grasses, elephant trees, and massive Cardon Cactus.

Our one-bedroom suite is generously sized and completely stocked with a living, room, dining, full kitchen, and bar. It has a smart room control for lighting, privacy, auto drapes, and a three area in-suite sound system using your smartphone for access all of your music. The bedroom had two beds and a nice bath en-suite and a second full bath for the living area. Oversized sliding glass dual pane doors shut out the sound and keep the room cool throughout our stay. Being November we are still getting some heat mid-day so we used the AC a few times. Really enjoyed the cooler evenings and opened up the suite to the large balcony overlooking the villas with their rooftop gardens. The whole space is open and inviting as well as perfectly private. At first, you see only green space until you realize the green is the rooftops of the lower units. We selected the tower which had a large Sea of Cortez views and amazing sunrises.

The copious amount of water features, sculptures, lounging areas, and pools are spread out through the massive property. It made discovering the grounds a long and joyous experience. The property is made up of three separate entities, the Luxury Collection hotel is a division of Bonvoy and we met many Marriott members enjoying this points-based resort. They have a wide variety of suites up to 3 bedrooms. The front row features a plunge pool and seemed to be the most popular of the hotel side of the resort.

The Signature Suites are the other side that is a private residence club and a member of Third Home a luxury second home exchange company. This is the side we are on and are using Third Home to stay here. Contact us or watch our videos on how Third Home transforms second homeownership. These are a combination of large 1, 2, and 3 bedroom suites each having the living, dining, and kitchens.

The far-left towers are the Solaz Residences and are simply amazing. Each floor is a large 5,000 sq foot condo villa. The top penthouses feature an amazing rooftop terrace that is like having your own resort on your roof. Outdoor kitchen, BBQ, lounging area, pool, and hot tub with panoramic views up and down the coast. They have sold out but have two on the resale market priced at $4.2 mil. The Penthouse features 8,000 sq ft of indoor-outdoor living.

There are 5 restaurants offering a wide variety of fresh seafood, Japanese and northern Italian. We were pleasantly surprised by the quality and variety. The whole resort is pet friendly and we met so many dog lovers that wanted to pet Oakley. They are quite accommodating to our lifestyle. Since the grounds are so spread out we walked everywhere including the nice beach so exercise is easy. There is a state of the art gym, spa, and beach activities like volleyball, SUP, kayaks, and the new electric hydro boards. These look so cool but didn’t get around to it on this stay. The Southeast views make for ideal sunrises over the Sea of Cortez. Evenings are equally magical with the soft lighting illuminating the well-placed landscaping.

We loved our stay here so much that we have already booked another week next month. We were not alone in our positive review there are many repeat vacationers, happy owners of their residence club, and the tower residences. There are plans to build a tennis academy and stadium behind Solaz. The future looks bright for this 5-star resort in the corridor of Los Cabo’s.
